Someone posted this video on Facebook and it really touched me. Richie Parker is a 30 year old Design Engineer who works for Hendrick Motorsports. The thing that makes this story special is that Richie Parker was born without arms. When you think of all the things that you use your arms for, you may wonder how in the world can he be so independent. He learned to ride a bike as a child, he feeds himself and he even drives. I think a lot of it had to do with his parents. When you watch the video, you will see that they just figured out how to adapt things so that Richie could do everything that everyone else did. I really admire his parents because I am not sure if I would have handled the situation like they did. Because they raised him to not feel sorry for himself, he has become a productive citizen and also an inspiration to others. He also had a goal early in life that he was determined to achieve.
As I watched the video, I thought to myself, am I willing to do whatever it takes to achieve my goal? Just like Richie is faced with obstacles, we all are faced with challenges. Now I am not saying that the challenges I face are on the same level, but they are challenges. Do I have the fortitude to push through and keep my eye on my ultimate goal? Do I look for ways to get things done instead of making up excuses? What if we don’t give up? You never know who is watching you and how you may be inspiring them.
As an entrepreneur, there are many things that you must face on a daily basis; however, the same is true if you are an employee. Is the thought of controlling your own destiny and leaving the rat race enough incentive to keep going? Everyone needs to assess if the sacrifices that you need to make in the beginning are worth the reward in the end.
My challenge to everyone including myself is to use Richie Parker as an example of how we should face everyday. Be grateful for the things you do have. Think of obstacles as things that make you stronger instead of feeling sorry for yourself or complaining. When you run into a roadblock, think of how you can get around it instead of becoming paralyzed. Live your life so that you can be an inspiration to others. Once you watch the video, let me know what you think.
