What Is Cloud Computing And Why You Should Care?

Cloud ComputingCloud computing is on-demand delivery of IT resources via the Internet that is free or pay-as-you-go pricing. It is the use of computing resources that are delivered over the internet.  The computer resources are computers that are distributed all over the world.  There are 4 cloud computing tools that are essential resources for online marketers.

Cloud Computing Online Marketing Tools

  1. Email – If you use Gmail or Yahoo as your email provider, then you are using cloud computing. This email programs allow you to check your email anytime and from anywhere you are as long as you have access to the internet.
  2. Collaboration – You can collaborate on documents with Google Docs.  With Google Docs you all have access to the same document and multiple people can edit a document at the same time.
  3. File Storage – DropBox is a free file storage program that enables you to access your files as long as you have an internet connection.  With DropBox, you can access your photos, documents and videos anywhere and share them easily.
  4. Note Taking – Evernote allows you to take notes that are available to you anywhere.

There are many advantages to using cloud computing tools.  Your documents, photos and music are not stored on your personal computer so you won’t lose them even if your hard disk crashes. Your data is safe on the web. Also, use of these tools prevents you from having to invest in expensive infrastructure costs.

The cloud computing tool that I use the most is Gmail.  Gmail is very powerful. In Spring Cleaning For Your Online Business, I talk about Gmail in more detail. I use DropBox for my business and my personal life.  DropBox is synced to my phone and iPad so all of the pictures I take are automatically uploaded to DropBox.

Leave a comment and let me know if you use these tools and how you use them.  Also, let me know if you use other cloud computing tools.

  1. My son uses Google Docs .. Never having to worry where his school assignment is or losing a USB. I am going to move my students to Google Docs for the same reason. I love cloud computing for that very reason. Google have some great products for people of all competency levels and purposes. Thank you for sharing.

    • Carol, since I have multiple computers, an iPad and a smart phone, I really need a way to have access to my documents in the cloud. Let me know how your students like Google Docs.

  2. Adrienne, you rock. What a clear and content-driven post. I use some of those things in my business. Our HOA documents, at 47 MB (seriously), I’ve put in Dropbox, so they are actually available. I LOL when people ask me to email the documents. Thanks for a great post.

Btw, do you want to possibly feature your name more prominently on the first page of your blog? Your photo is gorgeous (and you are)– top flight.
