As an online marketer, keyword research is very important to your business. Keywords are how people get to your site when they are searching. In order to be successful you need to “rank” for the right keywords so the right kind of visitors are coming to your site. There are several free keyword tools that you can use to do your research – Google Keyword Planner, Google Trends, Ubersuggest, The Free Keyword Tool, The Free Keyword Niche Finder, The Free Keyword Grouper and The Negative Keyword Tool.
Google Keyword Planner
As you probably have heard the Google Keyword Tool is going away. It is being replaced by the Google Keyword Planner. In order to use Google’s new tool, you need to set up a Google Adwords account. The Keyword Planner is different from the Keyword tool. The Keyword Planner combines the functionality of the Keyword Tool and the Traffic Estimator. The Keyword Tool only shows exact matches. You do not have the option of getting statistics for phrase match. There is one column called “Average monthly searches” instead of the local monthly searches and the global monthly searches. Google has a guide that shows you how to use the new Keyword Planner.
Google Trends can be used to perform keyword research. Google Trends shows you what is trending in Google search results. You can also view keyword search popularity over time. There is also a Top Charts section. Lastly, there is an Explore tab.
Ubersuggest is a keyword suggestion tool that uses Google Suggest and other suggest tools. You can type in a key word and get various keyword suggestions. You can use these suggestions as ideas for domain names, articles or blog posts. When I typed in “online marketing”, the tool came back with 345 suggestions.
Wordstream Free Keyword Tools
The last free keyword tool is Wordstream Free Keyword Tools. Wordstream offers a suite of free keyword tools that include The Free Keyword Tool, The Free Keyword Niche Finder, The Free Keyword Grouper and The Negative Keyword Tool. The Free Keyword Tool gives you profitable keyword suggestions. You can get the entire list of keywords returned sent to your email. The Free Keyword Niche Finder returns profitable keyword niches from a general topic. The Keyword Grouper Tool will take a list of keywords and group them together. You can enter up to 1000 keywords. The Negative Keyword Tool shows you the words that appear most often with your keyword. If you are creating PPC ads you will want to set irrelevant words as negative keywords. This will prevent you from wasting money.
As you can see there are many free keyword tools. You are not relegated to using Google for your research. Also, some of these tools perform functions that are not available with the Google keyword tools. Leave a comment and let me know which free keyword tools you use in your business.
