According to Wikipedia, time management is “the act or process of planning and exercising conscious control over the amount of time spent on specific activities, especially to increase effectiveness, efficiency or productivity”. As a full-time employee and a part-time entrepreneur, making the best use of my time is imperative.
My mentor Connie Ragen Green and my friend Geoff Hoff wrote a book called “Time Management Strategies for Entrepreneurs – How to Manage Your Time To Increase Your Bottom Line”. They wrote and published this book over a Labor Day Holiday. What a testament to time management!
This book states that in order to compete you have to take charge of your time and productivity as well as prioritize. Setting the correct priorities is something that I struggle with from time to time. I work from home for my full-time job. I usually start between 7:30 and 8:30 AM and typically work well after 6 PM. I need to set reasonable working hours and make my online marketing business a priority. Also, when I do work on my online marketing business, I need to prioritize the tasks that I complete. When working on your business, you must keep this in the forefront everyday- YOU ARE IN BUSINESS TO MAKE MONEY. The tasks with the top priority should be the tasks that will make you money.
Connie and Geoff described two management strategies – time chunking and time boxing. Time chunking involves setting a timer for a specific amount of time, working on a task during that time and then taking a break. You can repeat this several times to complete a task. Time boxing involves allotting specific amounts of time to specific activities.
My aha moment from the book was that multi-tasking is not a time management strategy. I am a multi-tasking junkie. I always have so many things going on at the same time. I read this book in a restaurant where I there were less distractions than I have at home. I actually read two books and wrote notes for two blog posts. I am going to seriously try to break my multi-tasking addiction.
- Record how you currently spend your time each day
- Make a list of activities that you do on a regular basis that could be done by someone else.
- Schedule some time just for yourself.
Delegation is something that most entrepreneurs don’t like to do. You believe that no one will do it like you do. Delegating tasks that could be done by someone else is a very effective time management strategy. You should be focusing on things that only you can do.
In order to be a successful online marketer and successful entrepreneur, you must master the strategies of time management.
